Founder & Head Chef, PurePups

Hello, I’m Leah Theunissen, founder and head chef here at PurePups. My journey into the world of dog food began with my grand dog who was hit by a car at the age of 3. At first, we didn’t see any significant injuries and the vet gave him a clean bill of health after x-rays, but a few years down the road he began to limp. Pain in his hip. I tried the CBD oils, but not seeing any change I tried doggie aspirin which quickly wore off. I began researching healthy ways our dogs can heal. During this time I learned there have been many myths about what my dog could and couldn’t eat, what proteins are easily digested, what veggies are best, and what to stay away from. I designed my recipes with high protein, nutrient-dense, quality ingredients. I’m happy to say he no longer limps but chases after his ball and plays like a young pup. Seeing his journey has given me a passion to see others experience healing or never have to go through major health issues in the first place by starting them out right, with the best nutrition nature can provide. I look forward to hearing about your pup’s journey to health.

Our Process

Our process includes all-natural organic ingredients and a lot of love.

bone broth

We start by making our own bone broth to ensure there are no artificial flavors or added sodium.

no extra fat

Once our broth is made, it goes through a cooling process which removes all the unnecessary fats that settle to the top.

bonemeal

We take those bones and grind them down to make a bonemeal. This bonemeal is packed with calcium and high proteins from the marrow.

Whole ingredients

We use whole-muscle meat with no animal by-products. The oats and rice are cooked in the bone broth. All our vegetables are raw to retain their essential nutrients.

PurePups uses the freshest ingredients from organic vegetables to marrow-packed bones. There are no additives or preservatives, added salts, or sweeteners. When building any recipe you must have a strong foundation. Dogs need a high-protein diet. That’s why we start with our own homemade bone broth. Yes, we looked into purchasing store-bought but they all contained added flavors, salts, or other ingredients that are not beneficial to dogs. By grinding down the bone to make a bonemeal it preserves all the protein from marrow and calcium from the bone. This ingredient is used sparingly due to its potency. Anyone who has lived in a town where conventional dog food is made complains about the smell. Why? Substandard meats and by-products!

Questions About Our Products?

Why We Do It

For years the dog food industry has gotten by using substandard ingredients and our pets have paid the price. Many of us are taking back our pup’s health by making their food. Some of us are consistently faithful while others just can’t find the time, slipping back into the ease of throwing the kibble into the dish. Here at PurePups, we know what it takes to make the best nutrient-dense food you can trust, giving you more snuggle time with your bestie.

I’ve been making food for my Cocker Spaniel, Copper. Anyone who knows this breed understands the severe eye, ear, and skin complications they’re known for. Many go blind and deaf. They become aggressive due to their discomfort. Upon taking Copper in for a check-up, his veterinarian was highly impressed he had not had any issues and he made the office staff smile with his pleasant and fun disposition. As a friend of mine has watched our journey from a distance he suggested I share my product with others. He could see my passion as I described the process of making this incredible food. Healthy dogs are my mission. Just like humans, their bodies demand good nutrition for a long healthy life.
